A Scottish government report published this morning has revealed that the government’s STEM Strategy for Education and Training in Scotland is falling short in key areas.
The second annual report reveals that the targets in place for Initial Teacher Education courses in STEM subjects where teacher shortages exist are being continually missed.
The report also tells us that results from the 2019 Young People in Scotland survey show a drop in the proportion of respondents who said they had or would choose to study STEM from 65 per cent in 2017 to 61 per cent in 2019.
Scottish Labour said that while there are positives contained within the report, more must be done to promote STEM education in Scotland.
Commenting, Scottish Labour Education Spokesperson Iain Gray said :
“ It is vital for the future of our economy and society that we continue to promote the study of STEM subjects in Scotland’s schools.
“This report contains several positives but unfortunately targets are continuing to be missed and more and more young people are expressing a lack of interest.
“Scottish Labour has continually championed the study and promotion of STEM subjects in Scotland’s schools and our warnings that STEM subjects being are squeezed out of the curriculum have often fallen on deaf ears.
“It is time for a joined-up and substantial programme for promoting the STEM skills that are so vital to our economy and society.”
