Scottish Labour has announced that under a UK Labour Government, investment in green technologies could see up to 100,000 well paid, high skilled, unionised jobs created in Scotland. Labour’s National Transformation Fund could generate thousands of jobs across Scotland’s renewables sector paving the way for a Green Industrial Revolution and a pathway to a carbon neutral economy by 2030. This plan comes at a time where our planet faces an existential crisis as climate change shows no sign of slowing down.

This week, research by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) showed greenhouse gas levels hitting an all time high, while the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has said we need to cut global emissions in half by 2030 in order to keep global heating within safe limits.

Labour's plan for green jobs would enable a transition from fossil fuels to a cleaner, greener, more sustainable energy economy that prioritises the workforce and effective use its expertise.

Scottish Labour is committed to working in partnership with the industry, workforce and their trade unions in every sector of the energy economy. saying

"Our plan will create new, good quality jobs that ensure people’s extensive skills are passed on to future generations of workers.

"The workforce must be at the forefront of the transition in their industries,

The current lack of a comprehensive industrial strategy has led to companies like BiFab losing out on work, and instead has seen wind turbines built in Indonesia being imported and used in a wind farm less than 10 miles from the BiFab yards.

"Through our investment in green technologies and our commitment to a proper industrial strategy, we will prevent the injustices seen at yards in Scotland from happening again."

Commenting on Labour’s plan, Scottish Labour leader, Richard Leonard said :

“At a time when our planet is on the very brink of climate catastrophe, bold and ambitious action is required.

"That is why the Scottish Labour Party is committed to leading the way with our Green Industrial Revolution.

“The opportunity for renewables in Scotland is great.

"Our natural resources are unrivalled across Europe and the Labour Party’s ambitions cannot be matched by any political party in the UK.

“Whilst Nicola Sturgeon sets her climate change ambitions against the targets set by Boris Johnson, Labour sets our ambitions against the action needed to save our planet.

“A vote for Labour is a vote to make Scotland a global player in renewables; a vote for Labour is a vote for a rebalanced and sustainable economy with a plan and a vote for Labour is a vote for the future of our planet.”
