Commenting on the news that NHS Lothian is paying private agencies up to £1,715 to cover nursing shifts, Scottish Labour's Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health, Monica Lennon MSP, said:

“Private contractors are making huge profits from our NHS under the SNP.

“Not only is NHS Lothian paying private firms £1.4million every month for an unopened hospital, we now know they are paying agencies up to £1,715 a shift to get nurses to cover the gaps in the workforce.

“While shareholders profit, patients and NHS staff are being let down.

“The SNP government has completely failed to properly resource our NHS, leading to a shortage of nurses, midwives and consultants.

“Only Labour will protect Scotland’s NHS and ensure it stays in public hands.”
