Responding to the ministerial statement on the Scottish Government’s review of the Gender Recognition Act, Pauline McNeill MSP said:

“Scottish Labour has always been at the vanguard of promoting equality, dignity and respect. We strongly believe that people should be able to live their lives free from prejudice, and it is unacceptable that trans people continue to face prejudice and discrimination every day.

“It is these principles which will underpin our approach to scrutinising any proposed legislation when it comes forward.

“We must also examine how the legislation interacts with existing legislation such as the Sex Discrimination Act.

“We will also continue to push for specialist services for trans services to be improved where possible now, without waiting for legislation to be introduced, including revising the fee required for a gender recognition certificate.”
