A call by SNP-run Glasgow City Council to extend a planned parking tax on workers to hit shoppers at supermarkets and edge of town shopping centres has been slammed by Scottish Labour.
In response to questioning by Scottish Labour’s Transport spokesperson Colin Smyth at an evidence session on the Workplace Parking Levy by the Scottish Parliament’s Rural Economy and Connectivity Committee, SNP-run Glasgow City Council’s Convener for Sustainability and Carbon Reduction, Councillor Anna Richardson called for the Workplace Parking Levy to be extended to cover all non-residential parking.
Scottish Labour Transport Spokesperson Colin Smyth said:
“Not content with hitting workers in the pocket just for travelling to work, SNP politicians are now leading calls to hammer people simply for going shopping.
“Extending the tax to anyone visiting an out of town shopping centre, makes a mockery of the claims this was all about tackling congestion and pollution in city centres."
“It’s clear these plans are all about fleecing hard-pressed families already feeling the squeeze. ”
