Commenting on the news that the lockdown period will be extended for at least another three weeks, Scottish Labour Party Leader Richard Leonard said:

“ The safety of the public should be the highest priority of the Scottish and UK Governments and for this reason Scottish Labour supports the decision to follow scientific advice and extend the lockdown further.

“However, merely extending the lockdown is entirely insufficient. The continued high number of deaths have reinforced the desperate need for further action to be taken to protect those most at risk of coronavirus.

“That is why Scottish Labour is urgently calling for the Scottish Government to put forward a detailed plan on how we can tackle coronavirus in our care homes and calling for greater clarity on the provision of PPE and the expansion of testing.

“A lockdown without PPE to protect essential workers and testing to track and trace the virus is an inadequate response to a national emergency”
