Responding to the comments made this morning by the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Catherine Calderwood, that Scotland is on the cusp of a "rapid acceleration" of coronavirus cases, Scottish Labour Leader Richard Leonard said:
“It is clear that our NHS and our social care services will be placed under increasing pressure over the coming weeks.
“This is why we are calling for a rapid acceleration of coronavirus testing to ensure there is a clearer understanding of the scale of the virus and we urge the Scottish Government to do all it can to ensure health and social care workers are tested as a priority.
“With concerns already raised across health and social care services on the standard and provision of necessary protective equipment, it is also imperative that we now see the rapid acceleration of the distribution of PPE as well.
“If we are to successfully overcome this great challenge it is vital that we both know the scale of the threat we face and that out valued health and social care staff are properly protected as they carry out their duties.
“This is a challenge of great magnitude: Let’s ensure we are prepared to overcome it.”
