Commenting on the news that taking First Bus Glasgow services into public ownership is no longer being explored by the SNP administration in Glasgow City council ,Scottish Labour Transport Spokesperson Colin Smyth said:

“Labour secured powers in the new Transport Bill to allow local councils to run their own local bus services, so passengers not profits were put first.

“That should now be the focus of the SNP in Glasgow not merely tinkering round the edges.

“In the forthcoming budget the SNP Government need to give councils the resources to set up those community bus firms or bus passenger numbers will continue to plummet, and fares will rise and rise.”

Frank McAveety, Leader of the Glasgow Labour Group, added:

“We are disappointed that the opportunity to buy First Glasgow is no longer on the table. It’s clear that we need a real solution to woeful public transport provision in Glasgow.

“But, it’s just not good enough for the SNP to hold their hands up and there’s nothing more that can be done.

"We should have the political will to explore bold steps to provide an integrated transport network fit for this century and deliver on our commitments to the City.”
