Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard will say “you can only trust Labour with the NHS, the Tories would sell it off to Trump and Nicola Sturgeon has fallen asleep at the wheel” later today (Monday).
In a stump speech to party activists outside Monklands Hospital, Mr Leonard will highlight a catalogue of missed targets that ministers have set for themselves.
He will say that First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has “failed to plan for the future of the NHS”, a record he will brand “even more unforgivable” because of the UK Tory government’s indication that the health service will be up for grabs as part of a post-Brexit trade deal with Donald Trump.
Capital funding for health services has suffered a 63 per cent drop in the past decade under the SNP, resulting in a £914 million backlog of maintenance issues across a deteriorating NHS estate.
Mr Leonard is expected to say:
“You can only trust Labour with the NHS, the Tories would sell it off to Trump and Nicola Sturgeon has fallen asleep at the wheel.
“Boris Johnston wants to sell off control of the NHS to Donald Trump as part of a post-Brexit trade deal which would be catastrophic for Scotland’s health service.
“The NHS is the jewel in the crown of Britain’s public services.
"It is unforgivable that Nicola Sturgeon’s government has allowed a potential £1.8 billion blackhole to open up in Scotland’s health budget in the next four years, and failed to plan for the future of the NHS.
"But this is even more unforgivable in light of the fact that the Tories are planning to put the NHS up for grabs in their catastrophic vision of selling off our public services to US corporations after Brexit.
“Be in no doubt: you cannot trust the Tories with our NHS – they opposed its creation, and they are intent on destroying it once and for all if we leave the EU.
"Be in no doubt: you cannot trust the SNP with our NHS – they have mismanaged it for over a decade. The SNP is asleep at the wheel as our health service faces its biggest danger since it was created.
“The NHS badly needs the massive injection of funding and support that only a UK Labour government can deliver.
"There is only one party that you can trust with the NHS, and that is Labour.”
